Alberene Soapstone

In 1883, business partners James H Serene and Daniel J Carroll formed a soapstone company located in the Blue Ridge mountains of Albermarle County Virginia. Combining the names Serene and Albermarle, they named this the  Alberene Soapstone Company.  They were known for producing laundry tubs, sinks and laboratory tables. For many people, their first experience of soapstone was with their high school science lab table! This is currently the only company producing American soapstone.  This stone is an ideal choice for both contemporary and classic designs. A beautiful medium grey stone when left natural which turns a deep black when oiled.
