Granite

Granite is the most common igneous rock found on Earth and is formed mainly of feldspar, quartz and mica. This is a hard rock that has been used since ancient times as a building material . Many types of stone fall under the term “granite” in the stone industry. These include basalt, schist, gneiss, and gabbro. With the broad array of stone, you will have a variety of colors to choose from. Granite is a porous stone and the porosity varies between the different stones. To keep the stone from staining, a sealer is needed periodically.  Granite is a hard stone and will be difficult to scratch. You can cut on granite but we recommend using a cutting board so you don’t dull your knives. This stone also has a high heat resistance. A hot pot placed on the countertops will not cause it to melt or blister but it can cause marks. Even though the stone is heat resistant, the sealer is not. Repeatedly placing hot dishes on your countertops can cause dark marks and damage the sealer making the stone more susceptible to staining. That is why we recommend using a trivet for hot items like pots, pans and Crock Pots.
